Steffany Hreno, Acting Deputy Chief Administrator
Steffany Hreno brings over 15 years of investigative and legal experience to COPA. In her current role, Steffany develops policy, guidance, and training for the Investigations unit, oversees the investigation of high-profile incidents and officer-involved shootings, and serves as COPA’s liaison with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, FBI, and Department of Justice. Steffany started at COPA in 2017 as a Major Case Specialist, became a Supervising Investigator in 2020, and was promoted to Director of Investigations (Operations) in 2022. As of 2025, Steffany also serves as an Acting Deputy Chief Administrator in the Investigations unit.
Prior to joining COPA, Steffany served as In-House Counsel for a private investigation company in Los Angeles, California. She began her career as a litigation associate at a Chicago law firm, where she focused primarily on commercial and business litigation. Steffany holds a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and a bachelor’s degree in Ancient Greek and Latin from Tulane University. She is also certified as both a Lead Homicide Investigator and a P.E.A.C.E. Investigative Interviewer.
