COPA RELEASES VIDEO & OTHER MATERIALS FROM OFF-DUTY OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 2200 W. MAYPOLE
Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) released to its website, video, and other materials of an off-duty officer-involved shooting near 2200 W. Maypole. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.
On May 31, 2023, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an off-duty officer-involved shooting. The interaction began when an off-duty officer drove west down the south alley in the 2200 block of W. Maypole and came upon a dumpster blocking the path.
“COPA initially reported, based on preliminary information received on scene, that the officer exited his vehicle and moved a dumpster, was fired upon by multiple subjects which led to the off-duty officer running back to his vehicle before returning fire, driving to a nearby location and calling 911,” said COPA First Deputy Chief Administrator, Ephraim Eaddy. “After further review of third-party video and internal assessment, it is unclear and has not yet been determined that the officer was fired upon first. COPA will continue to evaluate the use of deadly force related to this incident and remain committed to transparency and a thorough investigation.”
The off-duty officer was transported to the hospital in good condition with a gunshot to the left forearm. The involved subjects fled the scene, and it is unknown at this time if anyone was struck by the discharge of the off-duty officer’s firearm. There is currently no one in custody.
