COPA RELEASES VIDEO & OTHER MATERIALS FROM FATAL OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING

NEAR 800 N. HOMAN

On Friday May 8th, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) released materials related to a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred near 800 N. Homan. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On March 9, 2026, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of a fatal officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates the incident began when CPD was alerted to a vehicle wanted in connection with an incident on the I-290 expressway earlier that day. A POD camera later captured the vehicle on North Homan Ave, and a short time later, officers in an unmarked vehicle attempted to engage the driver. The vehicle fled, striking a pedestrian in a crosswalk, and continued to flee. Officers pursued the vehicle through an alley, where it encountered a CTA bus stopped perpendicular to the alley. The vehicle attempted to exit by driving between the bus and a parked vehicle, striking the bus several times. Additional officers arrived and attempted to engage the individual, giving commands to exit the vehicle. The vehicle then reversed and, while driving toward the bus, an officer discharged a firearm. The individual in the vehicle was struck, transported to the hospital, and pronounced deceased. Two officers were also transported to the hospital in good condition. A weapon was recovered on scene.

COPA serves as the designated agency for the City of Chicago authorized to release video and other materials per the Consent Decree and the City’s Video Release Policy. The 60-day deadline for this incident was Friday, May 8, 2026. Related to this officer-involved shooting, COPA has released to its website: body-worn cameras (BWC), in-car camera (ICC) third-party video, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and police observation device (POD) videos, OEMC Transmissions, Tactical Response (TRR), and Case reports, which can be viewed by visiting: https://www.chicagocopa.org/case/2026-0001206/
