COPA RELEASES VIDEO OF OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 11300 SOUTH AVENUE L

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) released video and other materials of an officer-involved shooting that took place on June 24, 2020 near the 11300 block of South Avenue L.

On August 21, 2020, three (3) days prior to the 60 day release date, the Cook County State’s Attorney Office (CCSAO) requested a 30-day extension which mandated COPA withhold the release of materials while defense council was notified. The requested extension was granted by Department of Law pursuant to Section IV(B) of the City’s Video Release Policy.

Officers from the 4th District were responding to a call of fireworks when an individual took what has been reported as a threatening position as officers approached in their police vehicle. One of the responding officers discharged his weapon through the patrol vehicle’s windshield toward the individual. No injuries were reported.

Materials released today include relevant body-worn and, in-car camera footage, OEMC transmissions, 911 calls, and Shot Spotter audio clips as well as Case Incident and Tactical Response Reports which can all be viewed by visiting https://www.chicagocopa.org/case/2020-2881.

COPA’s investigation into the officer’s use of force is ongoing and we encourage members of the community who may have witnesses the incident or have additional information to contact COPA at (312) 746-3609 or visit chicagocopa.org for more information.
