COPA RELEASES VIDEO & MATERIALS OF OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 70 E. LAKE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) released video and other materials of the officer-involved shooting that took place on August 10, 2020, near 70 E. Lake.

Officers were in the area after reports of looting in the downtown Chicago area. While engaging persons involved in looting, officers heard gunshots fired in their direction from a fleeing vehicle. Moments later, another individual fired at officers from a second vehicle. Three officers returned fire in the direction of the second vehicle that continued to fire at the officers as it drove away. There were no reported injuries. A squad car sustained bullet damage.

The materials being released today include 3rd-party video, Police Observation Device (POD) footage, OEMC transmissions, 911 calls, as well as Case Incident and Tactical Response Reports which can be viewed by visiting https://www.chicagocopa.org/case/2020-3664/. COPA is currently investigating the use of deadly force and other actions captured on video of officers.

The initial responding officers were part of the Community Safety Team and had not been issued body-worn cameras at the time of the incident.

The material released today should not be interpreted that COPA has reached an investigative conclusion and should not be viewed as an indication of the appropriateness of the officers’ actions. COPA’s findings and recommendations, once reached, will be posted to our website and available for review by the public.

COPA encourages any members of the public who may have valuable information or first-hand knowledge of the incident to contact COPA at (312) 746-3609 or visit chicagocopa.org for more information.
