COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTINGS NEAR 5300 S. MAY AND

2100 W. ADAMS 

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing updates on two recent officer-involved shootings, near 5300 S. May Street and 2100 W. Adams Street. COPA investigators immediately responded to both scenes and began the investigation. 

On August 11, 2022, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting near 5300 S. May Street. Based on preliminary information, the incident began when members of the Department responded to a ShotSpotter alert and approached a group standing in the street. A struggle ensued between an officer and one of the subjects, resulting in the officer discharging his weapon. The subject sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital. A gun was recovered on scene. 

On August 12, 2022, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting near 2100 W. Adams Street. Based on preliminary information, the incident began when members of the Department monitoring a Police Observation Device (POD), observed an individual wielding a firearm. Officers responded to the location and one officer discharged their weapon, striking the subject, who was taken to the hospital. A gun was recovered on scene. 

“COPA investigators reviewed and have obtained body-worn camera footage from both incidents, as well as in-car camera (ICC), and additional video. COPA can confirm body-worn camera footage captures both incidents and the subsequent shootings,” said COPA First Deputy Chief Administrator Ephraim Eaddy. “COPA is committed to full transparency. Materials related to these incidents will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of each incident unless prohibited by court order.”
