COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 9900 SOUTH EWING AVENUE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent officer-involved shooting near 9900 S. Ewing Ave. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On September 2, 2023, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates that this incident began when two on-duty Chicago Police officers responded to a person with a gun. When officers arrived, they encountered two individuals. When the officers attempted to engage with one of the individuals as they were walking away, they turned and pointed a firearm in the direction of the officers. Both officers then discharged their firearms in the direction of the individual, who then fled on foot. At this time, the individual has not been identified. A gun was recovered near the scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera and third-party video captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
