COPA Provides Update on Officer-Involved Shooting Near 8200 S. South Shore Drive

COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 8200 S. SOUTH SHORE DRIVE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred near 8200 S. South Shore Drive. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On May 11, 2026, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when two on-duty CPD officers responded to a call of an individual with a gun near a residence. As officers arrived in an unmarked squad car and attempted to engage the individual with verbal commands, the individual fled the scene. Officers continued to give verbal commands as they exited their vehicle and began pursuing the individual on foot. The individual then fired a weapon in the direction of the officers, and both officers discharged their weapons, striking the individual. The individual was then located lying nearby, where they were apprehended and transported to the hospital. Both officers were also taken to the hospital for observation. A gun was recovered on scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn cameras captures the officer-involved shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
