COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 5700 W. NORTH AVE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred near 5700 W. North Ave. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On December 21, 2024, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when Chicago Police officers were responding to a call of a person with a gun. As officers arrived on scene, they observed individuals exchanging gunfire. As the officers exited their vehicle, they were fired upon, and an officer returned fire, which did not strike any of the individuals. Two individuals fled the scene, with one of them being apprehended and taken into custody a short time later. An individual who sustained gunshot wounds was taken to a hospital in good condition. The officers were not struck by gunfire. Multiple firearms were recovered on scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
