COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 3800 W. FLOURNOY

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to the recent officer-involved shooting near 3800 W. Flournoy.

On April 15, 2023, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Based on preliminary information, the incident began when two officers engaged a group of individuals in the 3800 block of West Flournoy Street. As the officers exited their vehicle, one individual began to walk away. The individual then fled and was pursued on foot by the two officers. The individual fled through a gangway and into a backyard and then into another gangway with no ability to exit. The individual turned back to exit the gangway, in the direction of the officers, which led to one officer discharging their weapon striking the individual, who later succumbed to his injuries. The individual was in possession of a firearm, which was recovered on scene.

“COPA will work to expedite the release of materials from this incident, including all available body-worn cameras, third party video, audio, and reports. COPA’s investigation into this incident is underway. Our investigators immediately responded to the scene, canvassed the area, identified, and interviewed witnesses, and attended the autopsy,” said COPA First Deputy Chief Administrator, Ephraim Eaddy. “Based on an initial review of evidence, COPA has preliminarily determined the individual was not shot in the back as suggested by early reports. As a part of the investigation, COPA will review the initial interaction, foot pursuit, body worn activation and subsequent use of deadly force as well as all other matters to determine if the officers’ actions were in accordance with Department policy and training.”
