COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 3300 W. FILLMORE
(HOMAN SQUARE)

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update on a recent officer-involved shooting near 3300 W. Fillmore (Homan Square). COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On September 26, 2022, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting inside Homan Square, a Department training facility. Based on preliminary information, the incident began when an individual entered the fifth floor of Homan Square through an exterior door, which he accessed via a fire escape.

SWAT officers noticed the unauthorized individual, who picked up multiple firearms and a ballistics vest used for training. While in an interior stairwell, the individual alleged to have pointed two firearms in an officer’s direction, causing the officer to discharge their weapon multiple times. The individual sustained a gunshot wound to the face and was transported to the hospital.

COPA can confirm an internal training video system captured a portion of the incident but not the shooting itself. Materials related to these incidents will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of each incident unless prohibited by court order.
