COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 2200 W. MAYPOLE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent officer-involved shooting near 2200 W. Maypole. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On May 31, 2023, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Based on preliminary information, an off-duty officer drove west down the south alley in the 2200 block of W. Maypole and came upon a dumpster blocking the path. As the officer exited their vehicle and moved the dumpster, they were fired upon by multiple subjects. The off-duty officer ran back to their vehicle, returned fire, and then drove to a location nearby, before calling 911.

The off-duty officer was transported to the hospital in good condition with a gunshot to the left forearm. The involved subjects fled the scene, and it is unknown at this time if anyone was struck by the discharge of the off-duty officer’s firearm. There is currently no one in custody.

COPA can confirm third-party video captures portions of the incident and investigators are attempting to identify and obtain additional video. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
