COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 1600 S. DRAKE AVE
Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred near 1600 S. Drake Ave. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.
On July 21, 2026, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when on-duty CPD officers attempted to stop a reported stolen vehicle. The vehicle in question fled, and those inside later exited the vehicle and ran in multiple directions. An officer later located one of the individuals in a gangway and gave verbal directions to show their hands and to get on the ground. The individual reached towards the officer’s weapon and then ran past the officer, who subsequently attempted to detain them. As the officer and individual fell to the ground, the officer’s weapon discharged. No one was struck by gunfire, and both the officer and individual were taken to local hospitals in good condition.
COPA can confirm body-worn camera captured the initial interaction and subsequent officer-involved shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
