COPA PROVIDES UPDATE OF OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 1500 S. KARLOV

On January 9, 2021 the Civilian Office of Police Accountability received notification from the Chicago of an officer involved shooting near 1500 S. Karlov.

COPA investigators arrived at the scene and immediately commenced an investigation. Preliminary information indicates three Chicago Police Officers of the Community Safety Team noticed a vehicle occupied by three individuals, two male and one female, parked illegally in a tow zone. Officers engaged the individuals and asked the occupants to exit their vehicle. The two male occupants exited, complying with the officers, the female remained in the vehicle.

While one officer continued to speak with the female occupant, she brandished a firearm which resulted in two officers discharging their weapons. The female was struck several times and is currently in stable condition. The involved officers did not sustain any known injuries at this time. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

COPA has obtained and reviewed body worn camera footage of two of the involved officers and POD camera video which captured the incident. COPA will continue to canvass the area for 3rd party video and additional witnesses.

Video and other materials including 911 calls, OEMC transmissions, Tactical Response and Incident Reports will be released within 60 days of the incident and in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy.

COPA’s is committed to a full and thorough investigation into officers use of deadly force to determine if their actions were in accordance with Department policy and training.
