COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 11400 S. AVENUE G

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred near 11400 S. Avenue G. COPA investigators responded to the scene and immediately began the investigation.

On February 28, 2025, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when a Chicago Police officer responded to a call of a person with a knife. The officer encountered an individual armed with a knife and gave verbal commands. The armed individual moved towards the officer, resulting in the officer discharging their weapon, striking the individual. The individual was transported to a hospital in critical condition. The officer was not injured during the encounter. A knife was recovered from the scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
