COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 1100 S. DUSABLE LAKE SHORE DRIVE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent officer-involved shooting near 1100 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

On March 17, 2023, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began its investigation. Based on preliminary information, the incident began when a CPD helicopter notified OEMC (Office of Emergency Management & Communications) that a vehicle involved in suspected criminal acts earlier in the week was observed near Roosevelt and DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

Officers blocked traffic lanes at the intersection of Roosevelt and Lake Shore Drive in an attempt to stop the suspect vehicle. Officers exited their vehicles on DuSable Lake Shore Drive, approached the suspect vehicle and ordered the occupants to exit the vehicle. The suspect vehicle reversed, striking one officer. A separate officer discharged their firearm in response to the incident. The suspected vehicle then proceeded to flee the scene southbound on DuSable Lake Shore Drive. CPD’s helicopter continued to monitor the suspect vehicle and the involved individuals were placed into custody shortly near 71st and Lafayette.

“COPA is conducting an investigation into this incident and the involved officers to determine if their actions are in accordance with department policy and training,” said First Deputy Chief Administrator Ephraim Eaddy. “COPA was notified of the incident that occurred at Area 3 Detective Division while the suspect was in custody and after preliminary review, the matter was assigned to BIA for further investigation, as it does not fall within COPA’s jurisdiction.”

COPA can confirm body-worn video and third-party video captures the incident and the shooting officer’s body worn camera was activated. COPA investigators are attempting to identify and obtain additional video. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
