COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN DOLTON

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent Chicago Police officer-involved shooting in Dolton, Illinois. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On February 24, 2024, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates that this incident began when on-duty Chicago Police officers were conducting a homicide investigation and were attempting to locate a potential suspect in Dolton. Chicago Police Department (CPD) Officers observed the suspect leaving a residence and entering a nearby vehicle. The suspect then subsequently fled on foot. As two CPD officers conducted a search of the area, the suspect discharged their firearm in the direction of the officers. Three additional CPD officers, who also were responding, were driving nearby when they observed the suspect discharge their firearm. The officers exited their vehicle and gave verbal commands to the suspect to drop the weapon. Two officers discharged their firearms in the direction of the suspect. Neither the suspect nor the officers were struck by gunfire. The suspect was later located and placed into custody. A gun was recovered on the scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera captured portions of the interaction and subsequent shooting. Additionally, COPA can confirm that third-party video exists that captured the exchange of gunfire between the suspect and officers. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
