COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING AT THE 25th DISTRICT

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) posted on its website (https://www.chicagocopa.org/case/2020-3466/) notice of a court order issued prohibiting release of all materials related to an officer-involved shooting which occurred at the 25th District Police Station on July 30, 2020.

COPA received the court order entered on September 9, 2020, prohibiting the City of Chicago and all other city entities from releasing materials under the Video Release Transparency Policy or Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) during the pendency of the criminal matter.

Preliminary investigative efforts determined a Chicago Police Officer transported a detainee who then discharged his weapon wounding two officers. Three officers returned fire also wounding the offender during the exchange.

COPA remains committed to transparency and conducting a full investigation into the officer’s use of force to determine if they were in accordance with Department policy and training.

We encourage members of the community who may have witnessed or have additional video of the incident to contact COPA at (312) 746-COPA (2672) or visit chicagocopa.org for more information.
