COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFF-DUTY OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 7200 S. SPAULDING AVE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent off-duty officer-involved shooting in the 7200 block of S. Spaulding Avenue. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On January 9, 2024, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an off-duty officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicated this incident began when an off-duty Chicago Police officer traveling in his vehicle near 73rd & Spaulding encountered an individual whom the off-duty officer suspected discharged a firearm at a home nearby. During the encounter, the off-duty officer and the individual exchanged gunfire. The officer did not sustain any injuries and it is not known if the individual, who later fled the scene, was injured. The individual is not currently in police custody. 

COPA can confirm third-party video captures parts of the interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
