COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFF-DUTY OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 1000 S. MAYFIELD AVE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding an off-duty officer-involved shooting that occurred near 1000 S. Mayfield Ave.

On December 14, 2024, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an incident involving two off-duty CPD officers. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when a vehicle occupied with five individuals, including two off-duty Chicago Police officers, was stopped in the 1000 block of S. Mayfield Ave. An unknown individual exited another nearby vehicle and exchanged gunfire with occupants in the vehicle the off-duty officers were in, striking a male civilian. CPD later notified COPA that one of the off-duty officers discharged a firearm during the incident. The off-duty officer has since been relieved of police powers by the Department as the investigation continues. No one is in custody at this time.

COPA can confirm portions of the incident is captured on third-party cameras. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
