COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON FATAL OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 4300 W. NORTH AVE
Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred near 4300 W. North Avenue. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.
On May 29, 2025, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when CPD officers were on patrol when they attempted to conduct an investigatory stop of an individual. As officers approached, the individual fled on foot as the officers pursued. While attempting to detain the individual, the officers gave verbal commands, and a struggle ensued. A round was discharged, striking an officer in the leg. A separate officer discharged their weapon, striking the individual. The officer was transported to the hospital in serious condition. The individual was transported to the hospital and was pronounced deceased. A gun was recovered on scene.
COPA can confirm body-worn cameras captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
