COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON FATAL OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 3000 W. 21st PLACE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred near 3000 W. 21st Place. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On January 3, 2025, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when Chicago Police officers responded to a call of a domestic dispute involving a person with a knife inside a building. As officers entered the building and arrived at the apartment where the altercation was reported, they encountered an individual armed with a knife. Officers discharged their weapons, striking the individual multiple times. The individual was transported to a hospital and was later pronounced deceased.  The officers were not injured during the encounter. A knife was recovered from the scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
