COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON FATAL OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 1300 W. 19TH STREET

The Civilian Office Police Accountability (COPA) continues its investigation into the fatal officer involved shooting near 1300 W. 19th Street in the Pilsen neighborhood. Early investigative efforts have led to the review of relevant body worn camera, receipt of 3rd party video and a briefing with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office (CCSAO) regarding the determination and appropriateness of criminal charges.

COPA Investigators attended the autopsy of Mr. Miguel Vega and are in the process of acquiring additional video and audio evidence.

COPA remains in contact with the Vega family to provide updates on the investigation including next steps. COPA will release to the public the body worn video, third-party video and other materials related to the shooting as early as possible without compromise to the investigation but no later than 60 days from the incident as a part of COPA’s commitment to transparency and in accordance with the city’s release policy.

Due to the sensitivity of many of the matters we investigate, COPA also makes every effort to ensure the family of the deceased are offered an opportunity to review certain material before it is released to the public.

As Chicago’s civilian police oversight agency, we understands the public’s desire for answers and resolution and are committed to being transparent in our investigative progress and findings.
