COPA INVESTIGATES FATAL OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 1300 W. 19TH STREET

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is currently investigating an officer involved shooting which occurred yesterday evening near 1300 W. 19th Street.

COPA Investigators responded to the scene after receiving notification of shots fired at and by police and immediately began gathering evidence and reviewing body worn camera video.

Early reports indicate two officers were in their squad car when an offender discharged a firearm striking the officers vehicle. One officer retuned fire striking an individual, who is now deceased. Two additional individuals associated with the incident are now in police custody. A weapon was recovered on the scene.

COPA’s is currently investigating the actions of the officer to determine if the use of deadly force is in accordance with Department policy. As a part of its investigation, COPA conducts interviews of involved officers and civilian witnesses, gathers evidence including 911 recordings, medical examiner and tactical response reports before reaching a conclusion.

COPA will release to the public, relevant body worn and third-party video as well as other materials related to the shooting no later than 60 days from the incident as a part of COPA’s commitment to transparency and in accordance with the city’s video release policy.
