The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has concluded its investigation into a fatal vehicular incident that took place on May 25th, 2019, at the intersection of North Laramie Avenue and West Division Street. COPA has forwarded the investigations findings to the Chicago Police Department and are now pending review by the Superintendent.

The incident began when two Chicago Police Department vehicles responding to a call for officer assistance struck one another in the intersection of Laramie and Division. The collision resulted in one of the police vehicles also striking a vehicle containing Ms. Verona Gunn, leading to her unfortunate death.

In addition to the death of Ms. Gunn, numerous police officers and civilians sustained injuries and were taken to area hospitals.

COPA has delivered both the investigative findings and recommendations to the Superintendent for review as mandated by ordinance (www.chicagocopa.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/COPA-Ordinance.pdf).

COPA will post the Summary Report of Investigations (SRI) providing full detail of its analysis, findings, and recommendations on its website upon the conclusion of the Superintendent’s review and after any resulting charges are filed against any involved officers by the Department of Law.
