COPA CONCLUDES INVESTIGATION INTO THE FATAL OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING OF MAURICE GRANTON JR.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has concluded its investigation into the officer-involved shooting that occurred on June 6, 2018 near 47th and Prairie. COPA’s findings and recommendations, as stated in its ordinance have been forwarded to the Department and are currently pending review (http://www.chicagocopa.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/COPA-Ordinance.pdf).

This incident began as POD cameras controlled by the Chicago Police Department observed individuals engaged in multiple hand-to-hand narcotics transactions underneath the CTA Green Line. Officers responded to the location and approached Mr. Maurice Granton Jr., a foot pursuit ensued that resulted in a Chicago Police Officer discharging his weapon striking Mr. Granton Jr. who died shortly thereafter.

COPA responded to the scene on the day of the incident and immediately began its investigation into the actions of all involved officers. Over the course of the investigation COPA interviewed numerous officers and civilian witnesses, reviewed medical records, OEMC radio transmission, 911 calls and worked in coordination with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office (CCSAO) as well as the Illinois State Police for an in-depth forensic analysis of the evidence.

COPA released 9 videos related to the incident, body worn and third party, as well as 911 calls, tactical response and incident reports within 49 days of the incident. Video and other materials were released in accordance with the City of Chicago’s 60-day Video Release Policy.

COPA’s findings and recommendations, if applicable, will be reflected in the Summary Report of Investigation (SRI) and posted on COPA’s website for review by the public upon the conclusion of the Department’s review and after the officers have been served with any resulting charges.
