Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update on a recent officer-involved shooting near 9900 S. Wentworth. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On December 10, 2022, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Based on preliminary information, the incident began when Chicago Police Officers responded to reports of a suspicious person in the 9000 block of South Wentworth Avenue.

Officers responded to a residence and were informed that a male subject entered and held an individual hostage in the back bedroom of a home. Two officers made entry into a bedroom and observed the male subject with a knife and the alleged victim in the corner of the room. Both officers managed to remove the individual who was taken hostage and gave verbal commands to the male subject to drop the knife. One of the officers deployed a taser, subsequently the male subject stood and began attacking one of the officers, resulting in stab wounds to the officer’s shoulder and ear. The officer who was attacked discharged his weapon, striking the subject who was taken to a nearby hospital. The officer also survived and is in good condition.
