COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 8600 S. CONSTANCE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update on a recent off-duty officer-involved shooting near 8600 S. Constance Avenue. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On October 20, 2022, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an off-duty officer-involved shooting in the 8600 block of South Constance. Based on preliminary information, the incident began when three individuals approached an off-duty officer, who was standing outside her vehicle. The individuals announced a robbery and attempted to make entrance into the vehicle. The off-duty officer then discharged her weapon, striking one of the individuals, who was later apprehended at a nearby hospital.

While COPA can confirm third-party video captures the initial incident and subsequent shooting, two of the offenders are juveniles, therefore COPA is prohibited at this time from release of video and other materials in accordance with the Juvenile Court Act (705 ILCS 405/5-905(5)).
