COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 8000 S. WESTERN AVE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent officer-involved shooting near 8000 S. Western Avenue. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On March 9, 2024, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates that this incident began when two on-duty Chicago Police officers responded to a report of shots fired.

Officers were informed that gunshots were coming from above a store front business. Upon entering the rear second-floor landing, one of the officers observes shell casings on the ground. The officer then approached an apartment, where they encountered an individual standing behind the door. There was then an exchange of gunfire, resulting in the individual being struck. The officer was not injured. The individual retreated into the apartment and refused to exit. SWAT responded and was able to take the individual into custody without further incident. The individual was transported to the hospital in fair condition. A gun was recovered on the scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
