COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 7300 SOUTH HOYNE AVENUE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent officer-involved shooting near 7300 S. Hoyne Ave. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On September 17, 2023, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred when three on-duty Chicago Police officers and one on-duty Chicago Police sergeant were responding to a call of a stolen vehicle. The officers spotted the stolen vehicle and attempted to stop it. The individual driving the vehicle did not stop and a decision was made to not continue the pursuit.

The officers subsequently located the stolen vehicle parked with an individual standing outside the vehicle. The individual saw the officers and began running. Two of the officers began a foot pursuit of the individual and one of the officers gave several verbal commands for the individual to show their hands. One of the officers discharged their weapon, striking the individual, who was taken to the hospital in good condition. A gun was recovered on the scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
