COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 7100 S. CYRIL AVE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent officer-involved shooting near 7100 S. Cyril Avenue. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On September 16, 2024, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates that this incident began when Chicago Police officers were responding to a call of a person with a gun.  The officers encountered an individual who fled on foot and was struck by a vehicle. The individual fell to the pavement after being struck and was observed holding a firearm. Officers gave verbal commands to drop the firearm, but the individual fled again on foot. The individual pointed the firearm at officers, leading one officer to discharge their firearm. Officers pursued the individual on foot who on another occasion turned towards the officers with the firearm in hand, resulting in another officer to discharge their firearm towards the individual. The individual was eventually taken into custody by officers. No one was struck by gunfire. A gun was recovered on scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera captures portions of the incident and the use of force by officers. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
