COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 600 N. CENTRAL PARK AVE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update on a recent officer-involved shooting near 600 N. Central Park Avenue. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On November 12, 2022, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting in the 600 block of North Central Park Avenue. Based on preliminary information, the incident began when officers attempted a traffic stop due to a suspected seatbelt violation.

Shortly after officers attempted the traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle fled. Officers later spotted the vehicle and began to follow it into an alley, and then into a garage. The driver then exited the vehicle and ascended a flight of stairs towards a second-story apartment. Officers gave verbal commands to ‘drop the gun’ as they pursued the individual, who attempted to enter a unit through the rear. One officer then discharged his weapon, striking the individual, who was taken to a nearby hospital. Multiple firearms were subsequently recovered from the scene.

COPA can confirm there is body-worn camera video of the incident, and we are working to obtain additional 3rd party video. Materials related to these incidents will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of each incident unless prohibited by court order.
