COPA Provides Update on Officer-Involved Shooting Near 5700 S. Michigan Avenue

COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 5700 S. MICHIGAN AVENUE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred near 5700 S. Michigan Avenue. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On November 18, 2025, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when two CPD officers in an unmarked vehicle were in the vicinity of a liquor store and attempted an investigatory stop of an individual leaving the store. As officers engaged, the individual fled and one officer pursued on foot. The individual ran into a nearby alley and attempted to discard a weapon, which they then attempted to retrieve. One officer discharged their weapon, striking the individual, who was taken to the hospital. One officer was also taken to the hospital in good condition. A weapon was recovered on scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn cameras captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
