COPA Provides Update on Officer-Involved Shooting Near 5200 W. Madison Street

COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 5200 W. MADISON STREET

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred near 5200 W. Madison Street. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On September 17, 2025, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when Chicago Police Officers observed an individual walking in the middle of the street carrying a large knife. Several officers engaged the individual, who began briefly advancing towards civilians with the knife, and gave verbal commands to drop the weapon. Three officers and a Sergeant deployed their taser at the individual, which was ineffective. Shortly after, a Sergeant discharged their weapon, striking the individual multiple times. The individual was taken to the hospital in serious condition, and the Sergeant was also taken to a hospital for observation. A knife was found on scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera and 3rd party video captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
