COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 4700 W. 5th AVENUE
Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred near 4700 W. 5th Avenue. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.
On January 12, 2026, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when two on-duty CPD officers were on patrol and observed a parked vehicle with an individual sleeping inside. As the officers approached, they observed a gun sitting on the individual’s lap and called for additional backup. The officers then attempted to engage the individual, which led to an officer discharging their weapon, striking multiple areas of the vehicle. The individual was treated on scene for minor injuries caused by broken glass. A weapon was recovered on scene.
COPA can confirm body-worn cameras and POD video captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
