COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 400 W. BLACKHAWK

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update on a recent officer-involved shooting near 400 W. Blackhawk. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On October 2, 2022, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting in the 400 block of West Blackhawk in the Old Town neighborhood. Based on preliminary information, the incident began when officers were alerted by people nearby that an individual was pointing a gun in their direction.

Shortly thereafter, officers identified the individual described and began to pursue him on foot. After officers engaged the individual, one officer deployed his taser twice, but did not appear to make contact with the individual. As the individual continued to flee, he discharged his weapon in the direction of the officer. The officer then discharged his weapon, fatally striking the individual.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera, as well as third-party video captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to these incidents will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of each incident unless prohibited by court order.
