COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 3800 W. NORTH AVENUE
Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent officer-involved shooting near 3800 W. North Avenue. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.
On July 13, 2024, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates that this incident began when two on-duty Chicago Police officers observed a group of individuals drinking in an alley. As the officers approached the group, one of the officers observed an individual flee on foot while armed with a gun. The officer began to pursue the individual on foot and gave verbal commands to drop their weapon. The individual threw the gun, causing it to land on the ground nearby. The individual then reached for the gun and one of the officers discharged their firearm, striking the individual multiple times. The individual was transported to the hospital in critical condition. A gun was recovered on scene.
COPA can confirm body-worn camera and third-party camera footage captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
