COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 300 W. 56th PLACE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent officer-involved shooting near 300 W. 56th Place. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On July 24, 2023, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates that this event occurred after police received a complaint for a trespassing incident in the area of 357 W. 56th Place. Chicago Police officers monitored the area through a Police Observation Device (POD) and observed a group of individuals in an alley. Several Chicago Police Officers arrived in the area in four unmarked police vehicles.

Upon their arrival, officers exited their vehicles to engage the group of individuals on foot as well as an individual driving a black sedan.  While on foot, multiple officers attempted to engage the driver of the black sedan, as the vehicle attempted to leave the area, striking a police vehicle, and ultimately fleeing the scene.  During this altercation, two officers discharged their firearms at the moving sedan. Currently, no one is in custody.

“After an initial review of available evidence, it is believed that during this incident, a Chicago Police Officer discharged their weapon and inadvertently struck a fellow officer in the hand in the course of firing at the fleeing sedan,” said COPA First Deputy Chief Administrator, Ephraim Eaddy. “There is currently no indication that shots were fired from the sedan, or by any other civilian and there are no reports of a gun recovered. The officer was taken to the hospital in good condition.”

COPA can confirm body-worn camera captures the incident and investigators are attempting to identify and obtain additional video. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
