Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent officer-involved shooting near 2400 E. 72nd Street. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On August 5, 2023, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. As one of the officers exited their vehicle and approached, the individual fled on foot. Both officers then engaged in a foot pursuit ordering the individual to stop as they ran East on 72nd Street.

As the foot pursuit continued, one officer gave verbal commands to drop the weapon. The individual then fired their weapon in the direction of the officers. One officer returned fire, striking the individual who was taken to the hospital in critical condition. A gun was recovered on scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera captures the incident and investigators are attempting to identify additional video.
