COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 2200 S. SACRAMENTO

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent officer-involved shooting near 2200 S. Sacramento. On March 25, 2023, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began its investigation.

Based on preliminary information, four officers were in a police vehicle on patrol when they were notified of shots fired nearby, and then observed a large group of individuals standing outside. Two of the officers exited their vehicle to patrol the block, while the other two officers continued to look for other individuals.

One of the officers engaged an individual nearby as a second officer continued to patrol on foot. As the second officer approached the rear back of a porch after hearing sounds on the stairs, the officer, with other responding officers, apprehended two juveniles who were then taken into custody. Two handguns were recovered.

As officers stood in the alley with the apprehended juveniles, a group of unknown individuals appeared at the mouth of the alley. An unidentified member of the group fired towards officers which resulted in one officer discharging their weapon in the direction of the individuals. Officers pursued the group, and two individuals were taken into police custody. None of the individuals taken into custody sustained any injuries as a result of the officer discharging their weapon. A weapon was recovered nearby.

COPA can confirm body-worn video captures the initial incident, and the shooting officer’s body worn camera was activated. COPA investigators are attempting to identify and obtain additional video. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
