COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 2000 E. 79th STREET

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred near 2000 E. 79th Street. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On July 3, 2026, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when on-duty CPD Officers in an unmarked vehicle initiated a traffic stop of an individual in a non-street legal vehicle. After the individual was asked to step out of the vehicle, they fled from officers on foot. Both officers pursued on foot and one officer met the individual in an alley and a struggle ensued. Shortly after, the second officer reached the alley, attempting to assist their partner. The individual, who had pulled out a firearm, shot one officer in their ballistic vest. That officer then discharged their weapon, striking the individual. The second officer also sustained a gunshot wound to their arm. The individual was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and the injured officers were also taken to a hospital in good condition. A firearm was recovered on scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera captured the initial interaction and subsequent officer-involved shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
