COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 1 W. WALTON ST

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent officer-involved shooting near 1 W. Walton Street. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On January 8, 2024, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when an individual intentionally drove a stolen vehicle through the window of a business. Multiple individuals entered the store and fled the scene in separate vehicles with stolen merchandise. One individual fled on foot and was encountered by members of the Chicago Police Department who were responding to the scene.

Officers exited their vehicles and approached the individual, who possessed a firearm, while giving verbal commands. The individual and both officers discharged their weapons resulting in the individual being struck multiple times and taken to the hospital in critical condition. One of the officers was also struck by gunfire and was taken to the hospital in good condition. A gun was recovered on the scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera and third-party video captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
