COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFF-DUTY OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 4800 S. BISHOP STREET
Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding an off-duty officer-involved shooting that occurred near 4800 S. Bishop Street. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.
On August 3, 2025, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an off-duty officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when an off-duty CPD officer was attempting to park their vehicle and was confronted by multiple armed individuals in a sedan. An exchange of gunfire ensued, and the armed individuals fled the scene. The off-duty officer was not struck by gunfire but sustained a minor injury and was transported to the hospital for observation. It is unknown at this time if any other individual was injured. No one is in custody at this time.
COPA can confirm 3rd party video captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
