COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFF-DUTY OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 10800 S. CAMPBELL
Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent off-duty officer-involved shooting near 10800 S. Campbell Avenue. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.
On July 23, 2024, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an off-duty officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates that this incident began when an off-duty Chicago Police officer’s personal vehicle was stuck by another vehicle carrying multiple individuals. During the encounter one of the individuals exited the vehicle leading to an exchange of gunfire with the off-duty officer before fleeing the scene. The off-duty officer was not struck by gunfire, and it is unknown at this time if any other individual was injured.
COPA can confirm a portion of the incident is captured on third-party cameras. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order. COPA serves as the designated agency for the City of Chicago authorized to release video and other materials per the Consent Decree and the City’s Video Release Policy.
