COPA Provides Update On Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting Near 800 N. Waller

COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON FATAL OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 800 N. WALLER

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred near 800 N. Waller Avenue. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On September 6, 2025, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when CPD officers responded to a call of a burglary in progress, where the individuals involved in the burglary were reported to be in a vehicle. CPD officers encountered the vehicle, and the vehicle struck marked Chicago Police vehicles. An officer then discharged their weapon, striking one of the individuals. The individual who was shot was transported to the hospital and pronounced deceased. A second individual was placed in custody and transported to the hospital in good condition A third individual fled the scene and is not in custody. Two CPD officers were transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. A gun was recovered on scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn cameras captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
