COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON FATAL OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 1400 E. 75th ST

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred near 1400 E. 75th Street. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On May 5, 2025, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when CPD officers responded to a call of a person with a knife inside an assisted living facility. After officers entered the building, they encountered an individual armed with a knife inside their apartment. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and then deployed their tasers towards the individual. The individual continued to disregard verbal commands and rushed toward an officer while swinging the knife. Two officers discharged their weapons, striking the individual multiple times. The individual was pronounced deceased on scene. The officers were not injured during the encounter. A knife was recovered on scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn cameras captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
