COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON FATAL OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN HAMMOND, INDIANA
Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in Hammond, Indiana. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.
On May 8, 2025, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when CPD officers responded to a call of a person with a gun in the 13400 block of S. Baltimore Avenue. Officers observed an individual entering a vehicle and fleeing the scene. The vehicle crashed a short time later in Hammond, Indiana. The individual exited their vehicle, and an exchange of gunfire occurred between the individual and the officers. The individual was struck multiple times and was transported to the hospital, where they were pronounced deceased. The officers were not struck by gunfire and were transported to the hospital for observations. A gun was recovered on scene.
COPA can confirm body-worn cameras captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
