COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON FATAL INCIDENT NEAR 800 SOUTH CICERO AVENUE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update related to a recent fatal incident that occurred as a result of police action near 800 S. Cicero Ave. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On December 12, 2023, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of a fatal incident as a result of police action. Preliminary information indicates that this incident occurred when two on-duty Chicago Police officers in an unmarked police vehicle spotted a stolen vehicle in a parking lot. After observing the vehicle, the officers drove into the parking lot and engaged the individual who was standing outside of the vehicle.

The individual immediately fled on foot and shortly thereafter, was struck by the rear end of a passing semi-trailer. The individual was transported to the hospital and was pronounced deceased. A gun was recovered from the scene. COPA can confirm body-worn camera captures the incident.

“COPA has determined after responding to the scene on the night of the incident and conducting a preliminary investigation, to retain this investigation for a full review of the actions of the officers,” said COPA First Deputy Chief Administrator, Ephraim Eaddy. “Per Municipal Ordinance, COPA conducts investigations into incidents, where a person dies or sustains a serious bodily injury while detained or in Police Department custody, or as a result of police actions, such as during attempts to apprehend a suspect.”
