COPA INVESTIGATES FATAL OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 2600 SOUTH RIDGEWAY

Today the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) received notification from the Chicago Police Department of a fatal officer involved shooting which occurred near 2600 S. Ridgeway.

COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and reviewed body worn camera video which captures the incident. As a part of its investigation, COPA investigators will continue to canvass the area for witnesses, third party video, pod cameras and other related information.

Preliminary information indicates officers were responding to shots fired and noticed a vehicle fleeing the area which subsequently crashed. The driver of the vehicle exited with a firearm and one Chicago Police Officer discharged his weapon striking the individual three times. The individual is now deceased. An additional occupant in the vehicle has been taken into custody. Officers recovered one firearm near the deceased and another in the vehicle.

Officers were equipped with body worn camera which were activated during the incident and did not sustain any known injuries.

A gunshot victim near the area of the reported shots, that precipitated the officers response to the area, was taken to the hospital and is listed in good condition.
