COPA CONCLUDES INVESTIGATION OF OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING AT THE CTA GRAND RED LINE STATION

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has concluded its investigation into the officer-involved shooting on February 28, 2020 at the Grand Red Line station located at 511 North State Street.

COPA’s findings and recommendations, as stated in its ordinance, (http://www.chicagocopa.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/COPA-Ordinance.pdf), have been forwarded to the Department and are currently pending review.

This incident began as two Chicago Police Department Mass Transit Officers observed an individual, later identified as Mr. Ariel Roman, cross between train cars, in violation of CTA ordinance. The officers approached Mr. Roman, who was unarmed, requesting that he exit the train. After exiting the train, a struggle ensued resulting in multiple taser and OC spray discharges, and ultimately the discharge of a firearm by one of the officers. Mr. Roman was struck twice and survived his injuries.

COPA responded to the scene on the day of the incident and immediately began its investigation into the actions of both officers.

COPA’s findings and recommendations, if applicable, will be included in the Summary Report of Investigation (SRI) and posted on COPA’s website for review by the public upon the conclusion of Department’s review and after the officers have been served with any resulting charges.
